Essential Transmission Jobs

MASTER TRANSMISSION DIAGNOSIS AND REPAIR WITH CONFIDENCE.

Experience the power of the latest software.

Modern automatic transmissions continue to increase in complexity — from electronic shifters and adaptive strategies to fully integrated IVT and CVT systems. For many technicians, this creates new challenges in pressure control, signal interpretation, and post‑repair learn procedures.

With the latest Snap‑on® diagnostic software release, you have the coverage, special functions, and FTID‑supported workflows needed to service these systems accurately and efficiently.

How Modern Transmissions Operate.

Modern transmissions blend electronic control with hydraulic operation. When the driver selects a gear, the transmission control unit (TCU) checks the gear‑range input, evaluates conditions like brake application and fluid temperature, then uses key sensor data to decide shift timing and pressure strategy. Temperature sensors influence warm‑up behaviour and line‑pressure targets, while speed sensors provide turbine and output speeds that help the TCU monitor ratio, slip and torque‑converter operation. The TCU uses this information to command on/off solenoids for hydraulic routing and PWM solenoids for precise pressure regulation.

Although the hardware varies across designs, the core principles stay the same. Traditional automatics use clutches and planetary gearsets, dual‑clutch transmissions alternate torque between two independently controlled clutches, and CVT/IVT systems adjust ratio continuously using variable pulleys. All of them depend on accurate sensor data and correct learned values to function properly, making scan‑tool data, functional tests, Guided Component Tests and required special functions essential for accurate modern transmission diagnosis.

NEW FUNCTIONALITY

HYUNDAI® ELANTRA (2015–2021)

The latest software release introduces two essential special functions for Hyundai IVT systems, giving technicians the tools needed to service these transmissions correctly and avoid post‑repair drivability issues. These advanced IVT procedures ensure the TCU can accurately control belt/pulley pressure, maintain proper ratio behaviour and deliver stable, smooth operation after any repair.

Many Hyundai IVT units also require manual entry of a barcode/ID when completing a learn procedure — fully supported within Snap‑on® diagnostic software for a seamless workflow.

New functionality includes:

  • IVT TCU Pressure Learn – establishes baseline pressure‑learn values after transmission, TCU or valve‑body replacement
  • Oil Pressure Characteristics Input – calibrates the TCU to the true hydraulic behaviour of the installed IVT
  • Barcode/ID Input Support – required on specific IVT applications
  • These two IVT procedures must be performed together to prevent issues such as slip, flare, harsh engagement or unstable ratio transitions.

Operational steps

  • From the systems menu select:
    • Transmission
    • System Tests
    • Oil-Pressure Characteristics Input (A/T or Valve Body Replacement)
    • Ensure vehicle conditions are met as specified on-screen
    • Enter the barcode information displayed on the transmission housing (5 steps)
    • Follow the on-screen instructions to complete the procedure

NISSAN® NV1500 4.0L (2020)

The latest software release introduces new CVT‑focused diagnostic capability for the 2020 NV1500, giving technicians the tools needed to accurately evaluate clutch‑solenoid performance and pinpoint the root cause of CVT issues with confidence.

These enhancements allow solenoid testing to be performed directly at the transmission harness, helping separate electrical faults from hydraulic problems quickly and without unnecessary component removal. This expanded coverage strengthens your ability to diagnose ratio‑control concerns, slip, harsh engagement and delayed movement by confirming whether the fault lies in the solenoids, the hydraulic system or the TCU’s control logic.

New functionality available:

  • CVT Clutch Solenoid Component Tests – verifies clutch‑solenoid electrical characteristics from the harness

  • FTID‑guided workflows – structured functional and electrical testing to reduce misdiagnosis

  • Enhanced CVT verification – supports rapid isolation of electrical vs. hydraulic faults

MORE EXCLUSIVE CAPABILITIES

Fast-Track® Guided Component Tests now include new enhanced detailed images and advanced procedures for key transmission diagnostics, including the TCM DCV Test, direct clutch‑solenoid assessment, TCC evaluation, and low‑coast brake clutch‑solenoid resistance checks.

These additions give technicians the ability to test and verify components quickly and confidently.

Why this functionality is essential for transmission jobs.

Skipping required resets and relearn procedures is one of the most common causes of comebacks in today’s transmission systems.

Snap‑on gives technicians the functionality and guided workflows they need to avoid repeat issues and verify repairs:

  • IVT TCU Pressure Learn

  • Oil Pressure Characteristics Input

  • Reset/Clear Adaptives

  • Transmission Characterization/Solenoid ID (Ford)

  • Clutch Solenoid Component Tests (CVT)

  • FTID-guided functional and electrical testing

These tools ensure the transmission, TCU, solenoids and hydraulic circuits are all properly aligned after repair.

Automatic Transmission Operation & Testing

TAKE A DEEPER DIVE INTO
Automatic Transmission Operation & Testing.

Modern transmissions are no longer just hydraulic machines — they’re intelligent, software‑driven systems that depend on precise sensor data, pressure control and learned values to operate correctly. Our latest Technical Focus article breaks down how these systems work, why issues occur, and how technicians can diagnose them confidently using a structured, repeatable workflow.

Inside the article, we simplify complex transmission behaviour into clear, actionable steps: how to interpret PRNDL and speed‑sensor data, how solenoids really operate, and why adaptive values and learn routines matter more than ever. You’ll also learn how live data, Guided Component Tests, functional tests and post‑repair procedures fit together within the FTID workflow to prevent misdiagnosis and comebacks.

Whether you’re dealing with a conventional automatic, a dual‑clutch unit or an IVT/CVT system, the article shows how to apply the right tests at the right time for a verified fix.
