Component Testing Made Easy

Diagnose and repair with confidence using Guided Component Tests

Experience the power of the latest software.

Modern vehicles continue to increase in electronic complexity. Sensors, actuators, and control modules now operate with faster signals and tighter tolerances. For many technicians, this creates new challenges in component verification, signal interpretation, and confirming repairs when faults are intermittent or difficult to reproduce.

With the latest Snap‑on diagnostic software release, you have expanded Guided Component Test coverage, enhanced visual waveforms, and Fast-Track® Intelligent Diagnostics-supported workflows designed to help you diagnose and repair accurately and efficiently. Instead of relying on assumptions, you can test components directly and verify results with confidence.

Why Component Testing Matters

Scan data plays an important role in modern diagnostics, but it only shows how the control module is interpreting information after processing. Many faults occur outside code setting thresholds or appear only briefly under specific operating conditions.

Scanner data often reflects the effect of a problem rather than the root cause, because the signal has already been sampled and processed by the control module.

Guided Component Tests pair scope-based signal verification with clear setup instructions and known good comparisons, allowing technicians to see exactly what a component is doing in real time. This closes the gap between symptom and root cause and reduces unnecessary parts replacement.

Scope data captures the signal directly at the component in real time, before any module processing occurs. This level of detail can reveal dropouts, distortion, or abnormal patterns that may not appear in scanner data.

Understanding Component Failures

Most electrical component failures fall into three primary categories: open circuits, short circuits, and resistance-related faults.

  • An open prevents voltage or current from reaching its destination
  • A short alters the intended signal path
  • Excessive resistance restricts current flow even when the voltage appears correct

Identifying which type of failure is present helps technicians choose the right test early in the diagnostic process and avoid unnecessary component replacement.

Snap-on Fast‑Track® Guided Component Tests are designed to support accurate testing at the component level by removing guesswork from setup and execution. Guided Component Tests help technicians test and verify component operation by providing connector views, test setup instructions, and known good waveform comparisons. This makes it easier to determine whether a component is operating normally or failing electrically. With visual confirmation and structured workflows, technicians can verify faults early and confirm repairs before the vehicle leaves the shop.

NEW FUNCTIONALITY

BMW® 328i 3.0L N52KP (2013)

VVT Position Sensor Signature Test

This latest software release introduces enhanced Guided Component Tests for BMW Variable Valve Timing position sensors on the 2013 BMW 328i. These tests provide clear, step by step instructions along with five new full color waveform images, allowing technicians to visually confirm sensor operation and camshaft correlation.

Using signature testing, technicians can quickly identify signal dropouts, timing irregularities, or wiring issues before replacing components. Known good waveform comparisons provide immediate visual confirmation of proper operation.

When diagnosing a VVT concern, technicians will most likely check the oil condition first, followed by inspection of the VVT solenoids. For VVT-related fault codes, it is common to assume the oil is low or of poor quality since the system relies on oil pressure to operate correctly. Guided Component Tests make it easier to test VVT solenoids electrically, helping technicians verify operation before condemning mechanical components or replacing parts unnecessarily.

Operational steps

  • From the system selection menu,
  • Select Engine
  • Select VVT Position Sensor
  • Select Component Information

Here you will see information on how the VVT position sensor operates, best test location information, component connector views, pin assignment details, and helpful technician notes specific to this vehicle and system.

Backing up one menu to the VVT Position Sensor Menu

  • Select: Signature Test
Fast‑Track® Guided Component Tests will provide information on how to connect your scope, where to connect, and will preconfigure all scope settings specifically for this vehicle and system. The test also provides detailed full‑colour waveform examples, showing what correct VVT sensor signals and camshaft correlation patterns should look like.

3‑Phase Fuel Pump Current Ramp Test

New Guided Component Test coverage is now available for the 3‑phase brushless fuel pump system on the 2018 BMW X6 sDrive35i. This test uses full‑color waveform displays to evaluate motor current, phase balance, and overall pump load in real time.

For fuel pump diagnostics, the 3‑phase brushless pump is newer technology, and many technicians are unfamiliar with how to test these systems electrically. The 3‑phase current ramp test makes it easier to determine whether a concern is electrical, mechanical, or control-related, helping avoid unnecessary fuel pump replacement and reducing diagnostic time.

Common Related DTCs include: P1214, P1215, P1216, P1217

Without proper electrical testing, fuel pump issues may return due to wiring faults, control problems, or unbalanced phase operation being missed. Guided Component Testing helps confirm correct operation before the vehicle leaves the shop.

Operational steps

  • From the system selection menu,
  • Select:
    • Engine
    • Fuel System
    • Fuel Pump
    • Current Ramp Test

Fast‑Track® Guided Component Tests will provide information on setting up the low‑amp probe, including component operation details, fuel pump connector and pin assignment, and guided instructions on where and how to connect. The test also provides detailed guidance and technician notes, along with full‑colour known‑good waveform examples, showing what correct current ramp and phase balance should look like on the 3‑phase fuel pump.

TAKE A DEEPER DIVE INTO
COMPONENT TESTING.

Modern diagnostics depend on more than scan data alone. Systems are increasingly software-driven, and processed data does not always reveal the true behavior of a component. Our latest Technical Focus article explains how Guided Component Tests help technicians see what components are actually doing in real time.

Inside the article, complex diagnostic concepts are broken down into clear, actionable steps. Learn how to interpret waveform patterns, evaluate motor current behavior, and apply Guided Component Tests as part of a repeatable workflow that verifies both the fault and the fix.

Whether you are diagnosing sensor issues, actuator faults, or control-related concerns, the article shows how to apply the right test at the right time for a verified repair.
