ADAS MULTI‑FUNCTION FRONT CAMERA RECALIBRATION

Experience the power of the latest software

Advanced Driver Assistance Systems are now standard across modern vehicles. Systems such as Lane Keeping Assist, Forward Collision Avoidance, and Steering Intervention rely on accurate input from a front‑mounted multi‑function camera positioned behind the windscreen. Even small changes to vehicle geometry can affect how these systems behave.

With the latest Snap‑on diagnostic software, workshops have direct access to Service Point Target Auto Calibration (SPTAC) for Hyundai vehicles, allowing camera recalibration to be completed accurately, safely, and in-house using the correct workflow.

Why ADAS Camera Recalibration Matters

Front camera systems do more than observe the road ahead. They actively influence steering and braking decisions. Because of this, recalibration is a safety‑critical procedure, not a refinement step. ADAS camera recalibration is not triggered by warning lamps. A common reason recalibration is skipped is the assumption that the system is functioning correctly because no warning lamps are displayed, even though the camera reference may no longer be accurate.

When Is Camera Recalibration Required.

On the Hyundai i30 PDE, Service Point Target Auto Calibration is required after:

  • Windscreen replacement
  • Steering or suspension repairs affecting vehicle geometry
  • Wheel alignment procedures
  • Resetting camera self‑learning tolerances

Even if the camera has not been physically moved, correcting steering geometry changes the camera’s relationship to the vehicle’s centre line and thrust angle. To restore correct operation, SPTAC is used to reset the camera’s field of view reference following these repairs. Skipping recalibration can result in inconsistent lane assistance, steering inputs that feel incorrect, and reduced driver confidence in ADAS features.

CREATING THE RIGHT CONDITIONS FOR RECALIBRATION.

Accurate ADAS recalibration depends on both the tool and the workshop environment. Key requirements include:

  • Adequate space to position targets correctly
  • Consistent, even lighting
  • A level workshop floor
  • Clear line of sight between camera and target

The SUN® EZ‑ADAS™ Recalibration System supports correct target placement and setup, helping workshops meet OEM requirements consistently and reduce setup errors.

Correct Recalibration Sequence Matters.

ADAS camera recalibration must be completed in the correct order. Skipping or reordering steps can lead to incorrect calibration or systems that appear calibrated but operate incorrectly on the road.

Wheel alignment must be completed first, to OEM specification, before any ADAS camera recalibration is performed. The front camera interprets vehicle direction based on thrust angle and steering geometry. If alignment is incorrect, the camera’s reference will also be incorrect. Professional alignment systems, such as John Bean wheel alignment equipment, help ensure geometry is set accurately before recalibration begins.

Recommended sequence:

  • Wheel alignment to OEM specification
  • Confirm windscreen condition, tyre pressures, ride height, and vehicle loading
  • Support battery voltage during recalibration
  • Set up targets using the SUN® EZ‑ADAS™ Recalibration System
  • Use the Snap‑on scan tool to run the SPTAC special function
  • Complete a pre‑scan, road test, and post‑scan

This sequence ensures the camera is recalibrated correctly and verified before the vehicle is returned to the customer.

Why This Functionality Is Essential.

ADAS systems can appear to operate normally even when camera calibration is no longer correct. Because recalibration is procedure‑based, not fault‑based, relying on warning lamps or vehicle feel alone can lead to missed steps.

Snap‑on guided workflows and ADAS coverage help workshops:

  • Recalibrate cameras correctly after wheel alignment and windscreen replacement
  • Avoid missed procedures that lead to customer comebacks
  • Maintain confidence in diagnosing and repairing modern safety systems in line with OEM procedures

What's hot in the latest software release.

NEW FUNCTIONALITY

Hyundai® i30 PDE 2020>

Service Point Target Auto Calibration Special Function

The latest Snap‑on diagnostic software release adds Service Point Target Auto Calibration (SPTAC) Special Function support for the Hyundai i30 PDE, allowing technicians to recalibrate the multi‑function front camera using an OEM‑correct static procedure.

This special function is used to reset the camera’s field of view reference after repairs such as windscreen replacement or wheel alignment, ensuring accurate alignment to the vehicle’s centre line and thrust angle. By combining guided on‑tool instructions with the SUN® EZ‑ADAS™ Recalibration System for precise target positioning, workshops can complete ADAS recalibration safely and consistently in‑house.

The service calibration is required to set the camera pointing angle parameters when the windscreen or camera ECU is replaced. The LDWS/LKAS module should be programmed with the correct vehicle variant coding information before service calibration.

Operational steps

  • From the system selection menu, navigate to ADAS / Driver Aids
  • Select: Multi-Function Camera
  • Select: System Tests
  • Select: SPTAC Calibration
  • Select: Follow the onscreen instructions to continue and begin the procedure

Why This Matters for ADAS Recalibration Jobs.

ADAS recalibration is often overlooked because the system may continue to operate without warning lights or fault codes. However, after repairs such as windscreen replacement or wheel alignment, the camera reference can be incorrect even if no faults are present.

This release makes it easier for workshops to:

  • Perform recalibration to OEM specification
  • Complete the process in-house
  • Reduce comebacks caused by missed procedures
  • Maintain confidence in modern safety systems

With expanded Hyundai SPTAC coverage, Snap‑on continues to simplify ADAS recalibration by combining:

  • OEM‑correct special functions
  • Guided diagnostic workflows
  • Dedicated ADAS calibration equipment

Helping workshops stay on target as ADAS becomes a routine part of modern vehicle repair.

Take a deeper dive into Multi-function Camera recalibrations

ADAS camera recalibration is a routine requirement following repairs such as windscreen replacement and wheel alignment. Our latest UK Technical Focus article explains when recalibration is required, why it matters, and how to complete it correctly on the Hyundai i30 PDE using OEM‑approved procedures.

The article outlines the correct recalibration sequence, including completing wheel alignment first, using the SUN® EZ‑ADAS™ Recalibration System for accurate target setup, and running the Service Point Target Auto Calibration (SPTAC) Special Function through the Snap‑on diagnostic tool. It also highlights common technician assumptions and the real‑world consequences of skipped recalibration.

Designed for general repair workshops, bodyshops, and windscreen installers, the Technical Focus provides practical guidance to help complete ADAS camera recalibration safely, accurately, and in-house.
